Surface Chemistry of Hybrid Materials

Since the early 1990s, hybrid organic–inorganic materials began to attract significant attention from researchers due to their numerous advantages. Hybrid materials generally include organic and inorganic components linked together at the nanoscale. Because of the nature of interactions connecting both phases, such materials can be divided into two types: a) those with no covalent bond between inorganic and inorganic components, and b) those with covalent bonds between the components. New generations of hybrid materials and nanocomposites with tailorable surface properties are finding increasing applications in many areas, including environmental protection, sorption technologies, biomedicine, sensing, catalysis, chromatography, or multifunctional protective coatings. Proper surface chemistry design is of the utmost importance, as the surface chemistry determines the key properties associated with practical applications in the above-mentioned areas.

Considering the above, this Special Issue focuses on the latest trends and advances in the synthesis and surface tailoring of various hybrid materials and their nanocomposites for different applications. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect articles dealing with new concepts related to the synthesis, functionalization, characterization, and applications of various types of hybrid materials. Therefore, we are pleased to invite you to publish in this Special Issue of Molecules entitled "Surface Chemistry of Hybrid Materials" in the form of full articles, communications, or reviews.

Inna Melnyk received her PhD in Chemistry in 2003 from Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry, National Academy of Science of Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine). She is a Senior Researcher at Institute of Geotechnics SAS (Kosice, Slovak Republic) and Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry NASU (Kyiv, Ukraine). She was a visiting scientist in University of Parma, Max-Planck-Institut Fur Kohlenforschun), CEMHTI CNRS Orleans, Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Dr. I.Melnyk has authored 80 peer-reviewed publications. She is one of the editors of the book ‘Biocompatible Hybrid Oxide Nanoparticles for Human Health’ (2019, Elsevier). I.Melnyk is an internationally recognized scientist with the core subject of research interest in the field of material development, sol-gel techniques, surface chemistry, water remediation techniques, nanotechnology, and structural determination techniques, with special emphasis on developing novel methods for the one-pot synthesis sorption materials on the silica basic as well as removal and analysis of pollutants and their effect on the ecosystem and human health. She is a regular reviewer in reputable scientific journals of Elsevier, Springer, MDPI and RCS publishers.

Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva received her PhD degree in inorganic chemistry in 1989 from the Moscow State University. She worked in industry after graduation and was appointed a Senior Researcher at the Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology in 1993. She did her postdoc work at Stockholm University in 1996. Since 2000, she has been a Senior Researcher at SLU in Uppsala, where she obtained her Habilitation degree in Materials Chemistry in 2004 and was later appointed Full Professor of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Her major research focus is in design and synthesis of porous materials and organic–inorganic hybrids with applications in water purification and hydrometallurgy. She is a member of the Boards of Inorganic Chemistry Sections of the Swedish Chemical Society and European Chemical Society. She has co-authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications and seven patents.

Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland

Mariusz Barczak received his PhD degree in materials chemistry in 2007 from the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland), where he is actually appointed associate professor. He visited many universities where he conducted his research, e.g. Stanford University (USA), NASA Ames Research Center (USA), Dublin City University (Ireland), The City College of New York (USA), and University of Granada (Spain). He has co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, three book chapters and more than 80 conference presentations. His research interests include inter alia modern materials with defined properties, including biomaterials, hybrid materials and nanomaterials, as well as nanotechnology, thin films, sol-gel methods as well as applications of various types of materials in everyday life, industry and environmental protection. He is a member of Polish Chemical Society and the Association of Top 500 Innovators, which is the largest NGO platform in Poland dealing with cooperation between the R&D sector and innovative companies.

National Institution of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan

R. Kasuya earned his Dr. Eng. in inorganic chemistry in 2008 from the Keio University. Between 2008 and 2011, he worked as an assistant professor at the Tohoku University. Since 2011, he has been working as a researcher at National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST). From 2020, he has belonged to the Global Zero Emission Research Center in AIST. Dr. Kasuya is a Senior researcher at the Global Zero Emission Research Center, National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST). His research field is metal recycling, which is essential for the estalishment of sustainable society. Currently, he focuses on a new recovery process from scrap materials, such as automotive catalysts, and lithium-ion batteries.

On Friday, 24 September 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 19th webinar on Molecules, entitled "Surface Chemistry of Hybrid Materials".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Dr. Inna Melnyk. She received her PhD in Chemistry from Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry at the National Academy of Science of Ukraine. She is a Senior Researcher at Institute of Geotechnics SAS in Slovak Republic and Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry NASU in Ukraine. Dr. Melnyk is an internationally recognized scientist with the core subject of research interest in the field of material development, sol-gel techniques, surface chemistry, water remediation techniques, nanotechnology, and structural determination techniques, with special emphasis on developing novel methods for the one-pot synthesis sorption materials on the silica basic, as well as removal and analysis of pollutants and their effect on the ecosystem and human health.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Gulaim Seisenbaeva, with her presentation "Biocatalyst Grafting on Functional Silicas for Complex Water Purification". Prof. Dr. Seisenbaeva received her PhD degree in inorganic chemistry from the Moscow State University. She worked in industry after graduation and was appointed a Senior Researcher at the Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology. Since 2000, she has been a Senior Researcher at SLU in Uppsala, where she obtained her Habilitation degree in Materials Chemistry and was later appointed Full Professor of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.

The second presentation with the title "Removal of Pharmaceuticals From Aquatic Environments by Functionalized Silicas" was held by Dr. Mariusz Barczak.
